Some facts and History SRI (Soran Restaurants, Inc.) provided by the good folks at the Depot Grill!
In 1908 the Blue Lakes Bottling and Spring Water Plant was built at the Depot site. They hauled the water from Rock Creek for bottling, it was operated by the Benoit family.
In 1917 it had evolved into a Texaco Gas station that served some sandwiches. The Diegart family started serving hot chili and soups along with the gas station operation.
In 1934 the Chevalier family started operations at the Depot Service, serving meals to the railroad workers and those arriving on the "Galloping Goose".
From 1944 until his death, Floyd Huller, who was related to the Chevaliers operated the Depot Grill.
1962 saw the areas first catering service and smorgasbord with the addition of the Caboose Room at the Depot Grill.
On November 1, 1959 Leo Soran took over operations at the Depot Grill.
May of 1969 the Turf Club, a former speakeasy, was purchased, remodeled, opened.
In 1987 Soran Restaurants set up concessions at the Magic Valley Speedway, operated until 1995.
In 1989 was the birth of Soran's Food Service opening a cafeteria at Universal Frozen Foods and continuing until 2008.
In 1991 Sorans Food Service expanded onto the campus of the College of Southern Idaho, and ran the food service until the contract end in 1994.
Soran's Catering Service has a great reputation for quality food at very reasonable prices. We have catered for United States Presidents, Governors, Senators, and Representatives, all state legislators , motion picture studios (Walt Disney, ABC, and NBC), hundreds of social events (charities, weddings, anniversaries, family and class reunions), the Turf Club and Depot were in a movie called "Breakfast of Champions", and the Depot was highlighted in "A River Somewhere" and a "Good Morning America" segment. Our affordable excellence in catering has touched almost every major business in the Magic Valley (from picnics of over 3,000, in plant lunches, to elegant company dinners). We fed over 5,500 for the City of Twin Falls Anniversary and have catered three meals a day to 500 fire fighters in a remote area of the South Hills. We have catered small French gourmet dinners. We have articles published about our establishment in all the local newspapers (from Twin to Elko), National Restaurant Association magazine and in the Restaurant Business magazine. We received National recognition for our commitment to community service. We have been associated with the Greater Twin Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Idaho Restaurant and Beverage Association for over 25 years, and the National Restaurant Association since 1976. We have received numerous awards and accommodations from the before mentioned.
Thanks to our thousands of repeat customers this year, we will serve enough hotcakes to stack from the Snake River to the Perrine Bridge. We will serve over 500,00 cups of coffee. We will serve over 40,000 pieces of pie, and each year we use over 10,000 loaves of bread. That is 240,000 slices, but it also leaves us with 20,000 heels. Each Tuesday night from 5-9, on our all you can eat "Golden Glo" fried chicken specials, we cook and serve 1,500 pieces of chicken. This years link sausage could be placed end to end and reach over the top of Mount Baldy. We will use over 3,500 eggs per week and you could drive to Hansen and back on the 13 1/2 miles of bacon strips we will use.
The Clicky Chicks would like to add what an incredible asset and boon to the community the folks at the Depot Grill are. They are completely immersed in the community whether it be cooking and serving for the 116th Welcome Home Party to rallying phenomenal support for a little girl with cancer.
All that said, The Depot Grill and the fine folks who make it happen do make some mighty fine food and a dang good cup of joe. Thank you Depot Grill - Happy Birthday - and here's to another 94 years!
