Massacre Rocks State Park
(Near American Falls, Idaho)
Massacre Rocks State Park is a beautiful place to visit, with quaint cabins for rent and 40+ campsites with amazing views. This is a far cry from the rumored history of the place. It has been told, the narrow passage between the large boulders made for dangerous travel for settlers on the Oregon Trail. In August of 1862 stories say there was a clash between settlers and Native Americans, which resulted in 10 casualties, and involved 4 or 5 wagons. After that tragic event, the area was named Devil's Gate, Gate of Death, or Massacre Rocks. Other stories said this was not true, and the place received an undeserving name, due to fear of ambush. What you believe is up to you.
Not only does Massacre Rocks State Park offer a wealth of history, it is also a geological wonder. There is visible evidence of the Bonneville Flood which unearthed parts of Utah and Nevada, some 14,500 years ago, which were under Lake Bonneville. As well as signs of a volcanic eruption at some point.
This is a fun place to stop on your way to or from Southern Idaho. Lots of walking paths to stretch your legs, and picnic tables for a family gathering.
